When Tony Quarry finds a young Mexican runaway hiding behind his barn and decides to help him, there's no going back. The boy, Primo Estrada, separated from his mother during a tumultuous border crossing three years earlier, has been under the control of the treacherous Tercero Colina since. At first, Quarry's reluctant to get involved in Primo's plight. He's rebuilt his life in a small North Carolina town after serving a prison term for the accidental death of a college student in a barroom brawl.

But when Colina tries to reclaim Primo, Quarry protects him. He is determined to not abandon Primo as his own parents gave up on him, and to stand up for the right thing regardless of cost. Furious, Colina hires Salvadoran criminals Martillo and Clavo Cuna - "the Hammer and the Nail." Quarry is forced to draw on all his resources, including a local priest and a former prison cellmate, to protect Primo. Everything he values is at risk when the Cunas raise the stakes, culminating in a violent confrontation at Quarry's farmhouse.

Quarry Steps Up A Tony Quarry / North Carolina Mystery Book 1 eBook R J McCarthy

R.J. McCarthy brings the reader into the world of Tony Quarry through a welcomed opening door rather than a shoehorned approach to fitting the reader into an uncomfortable position.

The Novelist demonstrates a cache of promising qualities including an exactness to his dialogue that avoids cultural stereotypes, intrigue and emotion that he shephards throughout the novel with a caring and balanced writers hand.

For me the key success factor to this first work was pace. While the aforementioned many luminescent qualities evoke from his work, the key to McCarthy's writing is his natural, and by that I mean unforced, approach towards pace and structure. It is this foundation that allows the characters of Tony and Primo to develop their friendship/adventures throughout the story while allowing each room in the storytelling to tackle their own fears internally while working towards achieving the novel's very heart felt conclusion. Never at any point does it feel like this is being achieved by sacrificing narrative storytelling. The writing is tight and concise with no hand holding and as a reader you can comfortably leave your suspension of disbelief at the front door before you step into this world.

This is a great first novel and now we have had a peak into the world of Tony Quarry, lets look forward to more adventures to flesh out and develop this intriguing character further and further into the future.

Quarry Steps Up A Tony Quarry / North Carolina Mystery Book 1 eBook R J McCarthy Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed this one! The characters were very intriguing, and the storyline was such that it kept me turning the pages! I am looking forward to more of Tony Quarry and other characters as they come to life!
The author provides wonderfully descriptive passages filling us with the anxiety, fear, sense of responsibility and love experienced by his characters. Tony, Primo and favorite dog, Russ, are the core of an unlikely group who learn to work through some unique life situations bringing a big smile to the end resolve. Looking forward to a next adventure with Tony.
I look forward to further writing by the author. This story is suitable for young teenagers on up. The more you get into the story the more you want to continue reading. well written.
I read this book over a year ago and thought I had submitted a review. I realized I hadn't when looking for more books by this author. This was the first time I had read anything by R J McCarthy and I was hooked from page 1. It was well written with something for every kind of reader whether you like mystery, drama, humor or romance. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next installment of the Tony Quarry series!
This novel has one of the best opening scenes I've read in a while. Tony Quarry is a fascinating and appealing hero - flawed, yet with a deep core of honesty and an unshakable sense of justice. His rescue of a young Mexican boy begins an adventure that has him fighting a pair of violent thugs, the social services system, the local sheriff and his own initial reluctance to be involved in any of it. Tony's tentative courtship of a social worker is a satisfying counterweight against these struggles. This is an engrossing tale with a rewarding resolution by a writer who ably uses vivid imagery and tight dialogue.
As a fan of mystery/crime/thriller fiction of all stripes, I was immediately drawn to Tony Quarry's character and back story. As a resident of the area of North Carolina being depicted, I readily identified with the local flavor of the setting and dialog. Instead of enduring a plodding introduction to the new main character at the expense of any interesting action, I was pleasantly surprised that Mr. McCarthy introduced Primo's story early in the narrative. As Mr. Stocker pointed out in his review, the story kept moving along at a compelling pace, even while the author established a firm foundation for future tales about the hero, his friends and his allies. Primo's story and the fates of the true "bad guys" were fully and satisfactorily resolved by the end of the book, so we did not have to endure that "to be continued" rip-off (which is becoming all to common in the genres to which this book is most closely related). When I finish a book about ongoing characters, I dislike thinking, "Hey - what happens next?" I prefer to think "Hey - that was a good story. I wonder what they will get into next time." I am looking forward to finding out what Tony Quarry will get into next time, and - in the same book -how he gets out of it.
Quarry Steps Up is a very well-written, descriptive crime novel with heart. It is a good read. McCarthy is a master of the simile and other descriptive forms. He did such a good job that I feel like Tony Quarry and Primo are part of my life now, as well as most of the other characters, and I am looking forward to reading about their next escapades.
