Many theories, more or less complicated, have been suggested, but even now the question cannot be regarded as solved. The explanation commonly accepted is that the alkali liberated by hydrolysis attacks any greasy matter on the surface to be cleansed, and, as the fat is dissolved, the particles of dirt are loosened and easily washed off. Berzelius held this view, and considered that the value of a soap depended upon the ease with which it yielded free alkali on solution in water. This theory is considered by Hillyer (Journ. Amer. Chem. I did not read much of this book, it is technical and seems to be very thorough for a company that wants to large scale manufacture or is large scale manufacturing soap. It is not a book for the home based soaper.
No one writes legitimate textbooks anymore! It's so refreshing to read genuine research by someone who actually has a passion for it and isn't being paid to omit or insert certain opinions. Such a great technical guide and reference for any soap-maker, newbie and seasoned alike.
Good book with useful knowledge and it was available at no cost. It would be just plain dumb to neglect to accumulate the knowledge in the free books available from . Good reference and resource material.
-Great book on soaps! Since I am a chemist, I found this book very interesting. It gets complex and too technical sometimes and its not rocket science that you cannot understand it. Information about medicinal soaps is a plus in this book and it can be a great informational read on soap manufacturing. I am sure you will get to know lot of facts surrounding it.
